Never used those timenudge or pushlatency commands before, but this guy claims it can help, maybe you should try it or at least find out what its all about, maybe people can use it to do some things they shouldn't be doing as well and if we learn about it can maybe see if people are using it as well after we get an idea of what it looks like.
I played on a 56k dial up connection fro 6 years. And I found for me anyway the best settings for the lowest ping was.

set cl_maxpackets 30
set cl_packetdump 3
set rate 4000
set com_maxfps 40
set snaps 20
set cl_timenudge "-100"

Turn the sound thing to a lowest setting unless you have a good sound card.

my ping went from 180's to 120's

check out http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/hl/ I know it's fro quake but a lot of the settings will work in AA.

cl_timenudge" instead of pushlatency !!

Pushlatency it another good way to tweak your lag. Type at the console: pushlatency. A value will be displayed again, like pushlatency -500. This the prediction of your lag. This value should be set anywhere from -1/2 your ping to -1 times your ping. Set this value to as high as -150 if your ping is between 150 and 300. If your ping is higher, set the pushlatency as high as -300.

Do this by typing at the console: pushlatency -150 or your desired value. If your ping goes down at all in the netgraph (lagometer ), pat yourself on the back; you're almost done. Here's a little chart showing how I would attempt to use the pushlatency command to decrease lag:

Average ping Suggested "pushlatency"
1000 -500 to -1000
500 -250 to -500
300 -150 to -300
200 -100 to -200
150 -75 to -150
100 -50 to -100

worked for me . just turn on lagmeter and try different settings 1 at a time till you find what works for you.

Personally no,
I do wonder though if this was more of a bandwidth issue rather then latency

Could be but I'm leaning towards that. But either way, I did see some difference on my end when messing with it last night with you. On the positive(as in +150, 500, 1000 not a negative value), I got a bigger blue bar on the lagometer, which either means longer delay in receiving from server or something I can't think of, it was also still real smooth. On the negative(-150, -500, -1500), people looked laggy to me, sv_packetdup couldn't see any difference between 1 and 3 or any other numbers I tried, even tried some negative just as a test even though it shouldn't work that way. Didn't try messing with rates either yeah could be bandwidth as well since he said he used a 4000 rate in the post which is 56k bandwidth rate.

There are good VPNs out there that will test multiple possible tracing routes for connecting to the specific game and server of your choice. Some friends have seen ~80ms or more ping reduction playing from South America to the US. Not the same as AU but maybe worth trying. Will post the name of the VPN my friends use when I remember, but there probably are many like it. This specific one charges like 10 cents a month per server you configure (e.g. 10 cents for Misfits, 10 cents for MSL, etc.)

mudfish was the one I mentioned. Other friends use wtfast. In any case, this only helps if for whatever reason your ISP is routing you in a very suboptimal way.

Highlighting this because it's relevant to another discussion we were having about VPNs, and possibly trying to prevent people from using them via IP range blocking. There ARE legitimate reasons for people to use a VPN while playing. Thanks dc good to know. If I were playing from Australia or whatever I'd probably look into it.

I'm glad to see that you still lurk about in the forums. You should come play some MOHAA with us some time. Server has been hopping lately. Seems like all the old timers been coming back. Except for you, of course... :)

yea already read, I'd be interested to know the ping difference first hand. But that guy hasn't been back lately and maybe they could provide some of the IP's they use so I can see if they were even on that list. But yeah, didn't think we were gona use that list anyways cause he has been absent lately anyways.
