It looks like a nice big target. Would look awesome with a bulls-eye on the sides.

In 3dsmax there is a modifier called Optimize, which removes vertices that have little effect on the overall geometry. It seems blender has its own version called "Decimate".

I grabbed a helmet off TheFree3DModels, and it is quite similar to the one you have shown. I reduced the polys to 1480, points to 870, and it is one object. I removed all the interior padding and clips etc to help before I reduced the total poly count. That way it kept the exterior look as best as possible. Shoot me an addy to send this to if you want to give it a shot. It is in Wavefront format(obj), but I can do (3ds, dae, stl) and a few others. I use Optimize as well in Cinema 4D R16, also the weld command is good for precise placement of points.

I did already reduce it and it worked but hopefully since you removed the inside padding etc it looks better then the one I did although mine came out rather good except for a few glitches cause of lacking polygons.
