Server Misconduct / Cheating

Post by Kelly »

Last night there was a player performing "silent" shots on the server. For those unfamiliar with this basically the player will shoot and simultaneously drop their weapon which can be done either manually or via a key bind.

This exploits a flaw in the game engine where the weapon is no longer held by the player and thus the shot animation and sound effect are cancelled. This is particularly frustrating because the game is designed in a way that the audio cue from the shot assists players in determining the direction of possible threats. This is factored into the game balancing/playability and is purposeful and intentional . Exploiting this flaw circumvents the intended design of the game and negatively impacts the overall experience for players. This is one of a few known game engine flaws which should not be intentionally exploited.

As far as I know, we actually allow it, or don't mess with kicking people over it at the least. Becomes redundant to kick people over things like this all the time.

Ray does it all the time.

Also you are kind of right, but the sound is not actually cancelled, normally it is played on the player's origin, but when its dropped, there is no origin for the sound so it resorts back to default of ( 0 0 0 ).

As far as cheating/misconduct, i see it as no advantage or disadvantage over normal gameplay. You take the risk of not hitting the first time and losing your weapon. Since it is a bug that can be fixed easily, it shows that most people do not mind that others can/will do it.

There are more then a few :P

We've never kicked people for silent shots. Best thing is to kill the fool who drops his weapon in the middle of a firefight.

Fair enough. I guess some people put more stock into the spirit of sportsmanship than others.

everyone has their own idea of what is fair, and what isn't. Is it fair to the admins of the server to have to keep babysitting when they wish to play? People are here to play and have fun, some find the challenge of a silent shot to be fun, others find it funny when the shot fails an the person loses the gun. Sportsmanship is more than just not using an exploit such as this. There are many minor exploits in the game that everyone does, or most everyone, such as binding keys, cinematic, clipping corners, kicking nades wasn't part of the game either, but we allow it. Sportsmanship also means respecting the rules of the clan, which we do not have many, and respecting them when they disagree with something you have stated. Basically telling us we don't put stock into the spirit of sportsmanship because we do not view this as a problem is pretty disrespectful.

I said that the comments and opinions expressed were fair (valid). I obviously didn't know that this was something allowed on the server or I wouldn't even have brought it up. If the server admins are saying "Hey this is no big deal..." then that's a valid statement.

Please don't tell me that I am disrespecting anyone for voicing my opinions about the nature of sportsmanship or the spirit of fair play. That comment wasn't directed at anyone, it was just a general statement about people who do such activities. Some people use death tells which for example I believe to be unsporting/frowned upon in casual game play (im not talking about skrims/pugs). A lot of people find this to be acceptably fair while others do it without regard for sportsmanship. What people can and will do in casual play will vary and I am entitled to have an opinion on if that's sporting or not. I am sorry that you found that offensive stormy. :(

It isn't that it was your opinion that I found offensive. I found the way you said this offensive. I reads that we do not put stock into the spirit of sportsmanship, and I took that as it was said. Sorry if this is not how you meant it. Carry on, keep having fun, enjoy playing with you regardless.
