HISTORY LESSON ON YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD
Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn’t know this. It’s easy to check out, if you don’t believe it. Be sure and show it to your family and friends. They need a little history lesson on what’s what and it doesn’t matter whether you are Democrat or Republican. Facts are Facts.
Social Security Cards up until the 1980s expressly stated the number and card were not to be used for identification purposes.
Since nearly everyone in the United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION message was removed.
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. His promises are in black, with updates in red.
1.) That participation in the Program would be Completely voluntary [No longer voluntary],
2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual Incomes into the Program [Now 7.65% on the first $90,000, and 15% on the first $90,000 if you’re self-employed],
3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year [No longer tax deductible],
4.) That the money the participants put into the independent ‘Trust Fund’ rather than into the general operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program [Under Johnson the money was moved to the General Fund and Spent], and
5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income [Under Clinton & Gore up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed].
Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month — and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to ‘put away’ — you may be interested in the following:
Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent ‘Trust Fund’ and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate.
Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?
A: The Democratic Party.
Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the ‘tie-breaking’ deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US
AND MY FAVORITE:
Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?
A: That’s right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!
Now, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!
And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it! If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be planted and maybe changes will evolve. Maybe not, though. Some Democrats are awfully sure of what isn’t so — but it’s worth a try. How many people can YOU send this to?
Actions speak louder than bumper stickers.

Now, Ms.D, I would appreciate if you could help me understand better. Are you against Social Security, against the changes that have been done to Social Security, or both? Generally speaking, why are people against Social Security? Do people often believe that a private pension system would provide better retirement checks?

Re: History of Social Security
I'm not against Social Security. I am against being forced to pay into something that in my opinion is a bit corrupt in how the money is managed.
Don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily mind paying SS to cover the benefits for those that have earned it now. They paid into it and they should be able to receive it. I understand the baby boomers are part of the reason for the state of SS now, but it isn't a surprise that the day would come when they would all retire and want to receive the benefits they've earned. You know the bean counters have known for years what was going to happen, but where are the real efforts to fix it? Raising taxes isn't the solution if you can't manage the money properly now.
I don't want to be forced to pay SS for anyone who doesn't deserve it. Anyone that hasn't paid SS or taxes should not be allowed to receive it with the exclusion of those with honest disabilities.
If you are going to force people to pay into something with the understanding that it is money they are eventually going to receive if they need it , but then tell them 'Well, its not really your money. It belongs to the government now. You aren't entitled to any of it". Granted, we shouldn't feel entitled to anything, that is part of the problem with this country right now. However, when you receive a letter yearly from the SS Admin office showing how much you've paid over your lifetime, it can be a bit sickening. Even though it says you should receive this "$$" amount, there is a good chance that amount could be 0 by the time your old enough to receive it. Perhaps they could stop wasting the cost of paper to send me the update? I don't know...
I hope when I reach retirement age I don't need SS, but I don't know what will happen between now and then. I also know that there will be plenty of people that will need it and there is a good chance it will be depleted. I don't have a solution. I would like to think an option to opt out would be nice. Tax me, but tax me less and let me put the remainder of the money in a savings account or investments in order to draw interest or dividends might be better.....IMHO

Re: History of Social Security
Social Security is a joke. If I could, I'd opt out, and walk away from 30+ years of paying in. There's no way I'm going to get anything back.
I'd be better off stuffing 15% of my salary in a mattress.

Re: History of Social Security
Illegal immigrants do not pay taxes
Immigrants pay property taxes either via home ownership or rental, as well as sales tax when purchasing goods in the U.S. Depending on their employers, the immigrants also pay federal, state, and local income taxes. Analysts told VICE News the population will contribute at least $12 billion to the federal government in 2015, and at least $10.6 billion to state and local governments via income and payroll taxes.[2] Undocumented workers pay their part despite the fact that they are explicitly banned from taxpayer-funded programs such as Social Security, Medicare, welfare, and food stamps. Undocumented immigrants contributed about $12 billion to the Social Security Trust Fund in 2010, according to the Social Security Administration.[3] Since illegal immigrants cannot legally be employed, they are often employed "off the books" in casual or seasonal work and are paid in cash, without taxes deducted and often below minimum wage. Employers often threaten to report immigrant workers to Immigration and Customs Enforcement if the worker complains about wages or working conditions.[4]
Since illegal immigrants often have fake or stolen documents (especially Social Security numbers), they often cannot benefit from Social Security taxes withheld from wages. The amount in question is evidenced by the Social Security Administration’s “suspense file” (taxes that cannot be matched to workers’ names and Social Security numbers), which grew $20 billion between 1990 and 1998.[

Re: History of Social Security
Anti-immigration proponents in the United States make many claims about illegal immigration from Mexico that are based on exaggerations, misconceptions, myths and outright lies. Some of their complaints may be true on a very small scale, but by and large, most of their assertions do not reflect the actual trends in illegal immigration into the U.S.
Further, those who oppose illegal immigration tend to focus their rhetoric on appeals to emotion with scant evidence, such as claiming illegal immigrants are "taking our jobs" and "threatening our security". Their only "solution" seems to be, "kick out the wetbacks and build a wall" (which would actually cause major damage to the U.S. economy).

Re: History of Social Security
Sorry TC your facts are flawed. Illegals pay no income taxes the majority of the time. They do however pay SS taxes via false social security cards. The only taxes they pay are the consumption based taxes like sales tax and personal property tax. So whereas they do pay some taxes, its still not fair to the rest of us that they don't pay their fair share. BTW you can look up everything I just said. BTW if 11.5 illegal immigrants weren't here there'd be no unemployed populace except those mooching off the system.

Re: History of Social Security
Oh yeah! One more thing Smarty! In case you can process this....( this WE shall see). The amount of Americans that don't pay taxes are not double or triple or ten times higher than illegals but experts have these numbers exponentially higher(you know that word did you hear what I just said or should I repeat that word. I will say it slow EX-PO- NEN-TIAL-ly). So are you applying everything you just said to us Americans too! Because if you do then everything you just said was BULLSHIT!... and if you don't ...Then everything you just said was BULLSHIT! Sometimes we speak with emotion and not accurate facts but before you say someone else is wrong about their interpretation of events or policies, you really should know what THE FUCK your saying rather than quoting false fact searching desperate authors. I am not of any opinion in support of people here in our country illegally and personally have understanding to alot of things that can be made better to our lives and should be revisited for policy change but don't allow politicians in our government as well as nation the ability to distract us and taint our truth of what really is fucking our country. Read from all angles and or sides make it your business to know the facts. To be a fact it must be accurate, realistic, true in all definitions and last bro NON-PARTISAN.... Nuff respect to you My man...much luv always. Holla BEATCH!
Re: History of Social Security
The Social Security Act of 1936. An excellent topic of discussion!
I could write for two weeks straight and still have plenty to add. But basically, my take is; The US was declared bankrupt under FDR in 1933, just a mere 20 years after the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, which took the control of our very own monetary policy out of our hands, and put it in the hands of a private central bank.
After our financial demise in 1933, our bankruptcy, the Fed, the financial demon essentially asked the US what it would pledge as collateral on the debt we owe it. These carefully orchestrated events virtually rendered our Presidents power, and the control over the economy completely void, absolutely repugnant. The chairmen of the Federal Reserve bank, from that point on, to present day, a private bank, dictates and sets the economic policy of our entire economy. The president adopts and strictly adheres to the policy of the bank in an effort to manage our bankruptcy. Three years after the banks inquiry regarding collateral, the Federal Government imposed upon us all The Social Security Act of 1936, in which you and I and our children, our childrens children, were pledged as collateral.
Long and short of it is, Social Security, like many other, countless other Government services\programs\benefits; Is not and never has been about you and I, its never been about the people, or retirement. Its an engine being used to undermine us, to rob us, weaken us while strengthening the bank, and government revenues.
The enemies within must be stopped!
