I agree TC should write better so it is easier to follow his thoughts. I think he generally is on point, but his rant-like way of expressing ideas weakens his ideas
About this issue, I see how people may feel bothered about the politicization of football —or anything else that should theoretically be apolitical. However, the problem is that life in society is not as simple as that, and that's why I say "theoretically". In reality, politics bleed into every aspect of daily life, because they affect every aspect of daily life, and I don't think that's necessarily bad. In my opinion, the players who decided to protest just made use of the platform that fame and media provided them with, just as others do on their own platforms (e.g. music, TV, information media, etc.). You may like or not like that, but that's the way it is, and not only in football. I'm not saying football should be about that; I am saying it will happen from time to time, and there is nothing wrong about that (it is the same when they honor the police, for instance: what do they have to do with football?)
Then, regarding what the players were protesting about, I think police brutality and/or police's institutional racism is something worth protesting for. It may not be noticeable to you, but it is to me as a "brown" (and certainly is for black people) how police is biased against non-whites. It is just the way it is, and I don't see how so many people around here are not able to simply admit it. And even leaving aside racial biasing, law enforcement in general is kind of messed-up in this country —this was discussed in length in an older post in the political sub-forum. That is actually ironic considering how people love to speak about freedom in the US, but then seem to have no issue in having a police and military and other law enforcement agencies whose power is completely blown out of proportion. Anyway, the thing is that these players are protesting about something that is real. Bezerk says why aren't these players also concerned with drug abuse, and domestic violence, and other stuff? Yeah, it would be great if they were (and they probably are, like any normal, decent person). But maybe it is most important to ask why are you so upset that they protest against police? It seems many people have a platonic idea of what police are both conceptually (a group of people much more empowered than the rest of us, which may sound good for a second but it is kind of messed up when you think more about it), and in practice (people that are often unprepared to hold so much power).
But none of the things said above are too important anyway. I might be completely wrong with what I think about the police, and it is very legitimate (although at the very least questionable) that some people think that police in this country is great. The reason I believe many people are pissed is that these players "disrespected" the anthem and/or the flag. And to me, that is the big issue. When I asked HOD about the pledge to the flag in school, I was thinking that it was funny that Bezerk was speaking about indoctrination, without realizing that his rage about all this issue was precisely because HE was indoctrinated —as were most of you, I presume— since the earliest age. Why does a kid have to repeat everyday how much he or she loves his/her country? OR hear all day all the america-is-the-best-country-of-the-world discourse? If that is not indoctrination, I don't know what is. Be exposed to that your entire life, and you will become a nationalist. And what is a nationalist? It is someone who thinks that his or her country is the best in the world because of the sole fact that he or she was born there. I think people in the US are simply too much into that nationalist mindset, which is what inspires the display of irrationality we are witnessing because someone decided to kneel during the anthem. If you are profoundly in love with your country and lose the ability to see if for what it is and not for what you would like it to be, if someone to says "you know what, I won't stand during the anthem because the country it represents may not be the great place they made me believe it was my whole life" will make you furious. You will think that the integrity of the anthem matters more than the integrity of people.
Summarizing: police is messed-up around here, I am very sorry to have to point that out. These NFL players are not doing anything wrong in protesting. I can see why people can feel bothered by it, but not to the extent they are. I think people are as mad as they are because these players messed with the anthem/flag, which are something sacred in this country. But do you ever stop to think why that is that way? Perhaps it has to do with the fact that you —an many generations preceding you— have been just taught to think that way. I think people in this country need to look into themselves and the history of this country and realize that they are biased towards nationalism before there can be a productive conversation about this whole issue.

Racism exists in the mind and isnt a physical manifestation. Discrimination is its physical form.
