After the recurrence of server lag the other night, I filed another ticket. Got this response today:

Hello,

We apologize for the long delay. It seems there was an out of control process on the host that was using a larger than normal amount of resources. This process was killed so you should notice an improvement in performance going forward.

Please monitor the server over the next 24 - 48 hours and let us know if you notice any further issues.
